If there’s one piece of advice I’ve got for business owners, industry leaders, spokespeople - anyone looking to improve their professional or personal PR - it’s to get connected.

If there’s one act I value above every other, every week - it’s making time to connect with others. I focus and work hard to make at least one new connection every week - whether it’s a fellow industry colleague, a media representative, a business connection or new personal friend.

Why? Creating genuine connections creates strong, great, organic public relations for you and your business.

Have you ever heard the saying ‘it’s not what you know, but who you know’? Yes, I agree it’s completely overused - but the truth lies in the focus of connection.

Who you know - your relationships, your connections - are the carriers of your reputation. They reflect the truth about who you are and what you stand for. 

There’s little that’s more powerful than personal testimony. You can issue a media release, publish a tweet, sponsor a post, create an ad - but the value and worth of who you are and what you can offer is ultimately down to your connections.

I try to make connections with a variety of people in a variety of ways, every week. You should do the same - and prioritise making at least one new connection every week - whether online, over the phone or face-to-face.

It can be representatives of the media - but it should also be community connections, industry colleagues and people you admire - anyone who expands your personal and professional networks.

Getting used to building proper, genuine relationships every week, personally and professionally, in and around your industry - is the backbone of good public relations.

Remember: public relations isn’t a one-off media send or solid statement - it’s what you say and do, and the connections you carry every day.

So how can you get more connected this week? Make the time to respond to emails, reach out online, pick up the phone, schedule that coffee and get yourself out there.

And remember - this should be a weekly item on your to-do list. Great connections and reputations aren’t built overnight - they’re built day-in, day-out, with consistency and commitment, over time.
