As the end of January rapidly approaches, we’re all well-settled-in to the routine of 2018, and I’ve noticed my new year conviction about weight loss is louder than ever.
If we want to lose weight - I believe Australians MUST move away from talking about weight loss.
Statistics show that getting fit and eating better are two of the the top 10 New Year’s resolutions that Australians make. Unfortunately, they also both make the top 10 list of the most commonly broken resolutions.
There’s such a prominent focus on weight loss in our society. Whether it’s media, social media, personal or peer pressure - so many of us focus on making choices about food based on weight - either to lose or gain it.
In the process of focusing so strongly on weight, I find people often make poor decisions about nutrition. They can fail to choose foods that enhance wellness and energy. And often, they don’t see their weight loss goals realised.
We are hardwired to have ease in our lives. Even though many of us want to make changes, old habits, old beliefs and old patterns often override our desires.
That, coupled with the constant barrage of diet and exercise information that is constantly fed to us, causes confusion when it comes to change in any area of our lives.
There is no one-size-fits-all model for anybody, in any area of life. But the constant barrage of ‘new’ information, especially around dieting, is just confusing and honestly ridiculous.
If you want to lose weight, most of us can do away with thinking - and talking about it - all the time.
Instead? We need to focus on creating and maintaining healthy, sustainable habits in our everyday lives.
Forget obsessing over the number on the scales and put your intentions into actions. Australia’s Physical Activity & Sedentary Behaviour Guidelines for Adults (18-64 years) encourage us to be active every day, and limit our sedentary behaviour. They have specific ideas on how all of us can meet the daily recommended amount of physical activity.
The Australian Dietary Guidelines set forth daily eating recommendations for healthy adults too - taking the guess work out of what we should be eating, and how much, for best health.
If we focus on committing to healthy habits every day, as recommended by the experts, we’ll get closer and closer to our health and wellness goals.
Let’s stop talking about losing weight. Let’s talk about what creates a healthy life, and take steps together to live that life.
